I am new to the ISKCON community. I have recently given up meat, but I have some questions about buying industrial milk. I have read online that cows are mistreated in these industrial factories. Should I buy organic milk or should I try and buy local milk from a dairy farmer? I live in Maryland.
I like this to know also.. i dont know with the milk you ca buy in supermarket. I buy at least biologic milk but still i have doubts about this milk. like to know why its should be bad and where i can find better milk( I dont have a cow at home!)
ciao haribol
You can try to find a small local farm that treats their cows well. If you buy your milk directly from a farm it will probably be raw (unpasteurized). Some people think that raw milk is healthier and some think that it has to be pasteurized in order to get rid of bad bacteria, but in the process it also kills good bacteria.
I live in Maryland, US and cannot find a local dairy farm that sells milk to people directly because it is against the law to buy raw milk in Maryland. It may be different where you live.
I would just like to buy milk from a local dairy farm that treats their cows well. Factory farms in the US are terrible! It would be nice if ISKCON could sell milk because we know how they are treating their cows.
I hope this helped, if you are worried about your health I would try to buy organic.
I only know the situation in the Netherlands, the biological milk which we can buy in the supermarket here comes from cows where the horns been cut off, so they are mistreated but not as bad as normal milk cows. The only brand here where the cows get to keep their horns is called Demeter. You could write letter to several dairy brands in your state to inform about this.
Milk straight from the cow would be best, but most farmers just sell the milk in big quantities ( at least 50 liter is my guess), too bad thats illegal in Maryland.
